Bio
Melissa Castrillón is a freelance illustrator currently based in Cambridge, UK. She grew up in a small town called Hitchin near London, to an English mother and Colombian Father and moved to Cambridge seven years ago to study. She earned a First class Honours Degree in Illustration in 2009 and is now currently studying for a Masters degree in Children's book Illustration at the Cambridge school of art. Melissa is always striving to tell a story through her images and her use of mark making and subtle colour helps to create and sense of atmosphere and mood to her work. Brooklyn based designer, Leah Goren previously described her illustrations as having ʻA beautiful attention to pattern, with characters that always feel slightly melancholy and full of emotionʼ. Since finishing her undergraduate degree, Melissa has had exhibitions around the UK, in Italy and Portugal. She has also had the opportunity to work with musicians, publishers, writers and retailers and absolutely loves applying her work how ever and where ever she can.
About the exhibtion
ʻAbout Faceʼ is my fourth solo show in Cambridge and first show to feature predominantly original works. I love to tell a story within my work, but for this show I wanted to give the viewer the opportunity to interpret and conceive their own story through the faces and the characters I draw upon within each of the images. A lot the images take direct influence from Folk tales and the natural world and are produced using varied mediums and methods, such as graphite, watercolour, acrylic paint and silkscreen. As well as a play on an old phrase, ʻAbout Faceʼ also contains the meaning ʻto change your direction, attitude or point of viewʼ which is always important in developing, changing and moving my work forward.
